Performance Review

Since we are not dealing with an established business, we are unable to examine any past performances.  In order to start an organic farming business, however, it would be both helpful and necessary to research other farms and the type of distribution channels they used or kinds of promotions that were successful. Any obtainable background information on the organic food industry in general would help.

The following are some statistics from the Organic Trade Association (OTA):

·         In 1990, U.S. sales of organic food and beverages were $1 billion.
·         By 2009, that number increased to over $24 billion.
·         In 2003, global organic sales were $25 billion.
·         By 2008, that number more than doubled.
·         From 2008 to 2009, sales increased by 5.1%.
·         Organic fruits and vegetables were among the fastest growing categories. If we were to begin an organic farming venture, these would be the best items to start with and gain the most profit.
·         Organic fruits and vegetables now account for 11.4% of all U.S. fruit and vegetable sales – this number is continuously increasing.
·         Fresh produce is still the top-selling organic category in retail sales
