Projected Financials

Financial costs involved in starting up an organic farm can vary depending on many different factors including: new vs. used equipment; land cost; etc. In order to become certified organic by the USDA, it will cost roughly $750 (costs may vary), and will take 3 years to receive certification. Because education is the primary driver of purchase intentions, our marketing campaign will include advertisements in local and university publications, and other venues on and around MSU’s campus. Advertisements in such publications typically cost between $50 and $300, depending on the size, location, and publication it is being published in. Advertising and marketing through social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter is free, making it a great option based on cost, as well as the recent popularity of social marketing, especially among educated people.  In order to sell produce at a local farmer’s market, it costs anywhere from $15 to $25 to set up a personal produce stand each time.
